Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist
Location: Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave., NYC
Sick
Directed by Kirby Dick, 90 minutes, USA, 1997.
"Unforgettable! Groundbreaking. Among the most intimate love scenes ever filmed." -- Stephen Holden, The New York Times
Kirby Dick's likable, much lauded film (Special Jury Prize, Sundance Film Festival, 1997; Best Feature and Los Angeles Independent Film Festival 1997; as well as being honored at the National Leather Association’s Living In Leather ’99 event) is an intensely private look at illness and its effects on art. It is a documentary that tells its story via captions, interviews, and footage of Flanagan's ( n its availability due to the social stigma of its sexually explicit and undeniably sadomasochistic material, much silence and confusion have surrounded this hidden treasure. Perhaps the most famous gay short film in European history.

Thursday, Oct. 5th, 9 PM
Un Chant d'Amour, The Attendant, Scorpio Rising, and Boot Camp
Location: Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave., NYC

Un Chant d'AmourUn Chant d'Amour
Directed by Jean Genet, 26 minutes, France, 1950.
Written and Directed by Jean Genet, this short film is the only example of Genet's transposition of his ideas and writing into images, Un Chant d'Amour may be categorized as a 'film poem' -- an avant-garde work comparable to the films of Jean Cocteau, Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, and Nagisa Oshima. Its lyrical evocation of gay passion and romance make it one of the most intensely physical films ever produced. Historically limited in its availability due to the social stigma of its sexually explicit and undeniably sadomasochistic material, much silence and confusion have surrounded this hidden treasure. Perhaps the most famous gay short film in European history.

The AttendantThe Attendant
Directed by Isaac Julien, 8 minutes, UK, 1992. Made for Channel 4 in London.
"Julien penetrates those crevices of lust and fear that other films cannot reach." --Tony Rayns, journalist
Isaac Julien's ‘attendant’—obsessed by a young, white, gay man in his erotic memory -- is black, older, wiser, and works in an art museum, where he sees a nineteenth-century painting of slaves in chains, "Scene on the Coast of Africa," come to life. Vivid imagery reveals the attendant's fascination with the psychic pleasures of sadomasochistic relationships.

Scorpio RisingScorpio Rising
Directed by Kenneth Anger, 30 minutes, USA, 1963.
Featuring a motorcycle gang that Anger met in Brooklyn, Scorpio Rising is perhaps the most influential film from the American underground. Exploring the rituals and lifestyles of motorcycle cultists through montage, found footage, and pop songs; this is the ultimate underground biker film, from a time when motorcycle clubs were synonymous with S/M.

Boot CampBoot Camp
Directed by John Scott Matthews, 6 minutes, USA, 1998.
Set against the backdrop of New York's Leatherman scene, this film pays homage to early gay underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger and the RKO musicals of the early thirties. Boot Camp finds the romance in the courtship between any two people, regardless of sexual proclivity.

BloodsistersBloodsisters

Darling International
Directed by Jennifer Todd Reeves and M.M. Serra, 22 minutes, USA, 2000.
A dark and sensual narrative that explores a skilled technical worker's sexual fantasies during her nights as a femme on Manhattan's lower east side, Darling International received an Honorable Mention award in the Short Filmmaking category at Sundance and has also been shown in Rotterdam and Berlin.

Preaching to the Perverted
Location: Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave., NYC
Preaching to the Perverted
Directed by Stuart Urban, 100 minutes, UK, 1997.
Hailed around the world and rarely shown in the US, this bawdy British comedy is about a young infiltrator, Peter (Christien Anholt), who is dispatched by moral crusaders in Parliament to gather evidence for a private prosecution against fetish clubs operating all over the United Kingdom, where many of the saucier activities are illegal. From his background as a virginal employee of the Holy Hardware Computer Company (motto: "Log On To The Lord"), Peter is thrust into the sex-glamour-shock of fetish clubs and parties. Beautiful women are there in abundance, wearing shiny latex and doing wicked, nasty things! The Member of Parliament to whom Peter reports is delighted at the incriminating evidence his protector is gathering. Peter, however, becomes infatuated with Tanya Cheex (Guinevere Turner of Go Fish!), a sex goddess from New York and leader of the fetish scene on both sides of the Atlantic. He wants her to calm down, become "normal," and avoid going to jail. She wants to pervert him. Who will win?
