Despite the difficulties created by the tragic events of September 11th, the NY S/M Film Festival had another successful run during its second annual appearance. While at first it seemed impossible to comprehend moving forward with the festival, ultimately it was decided that to do so would be a most fitting acknowledgment of "Business as Usual" - an attitude that Mayor Giuiliani himself was encouraging as the order of the day.
So, in that spirit, the 2nd Annual NY S/M Film Festival unfolded. Thor Stockman returned to give an encore presentation, "(Still More of) The Good, The Bad, and the Ridiculous: S/M at the Movies, The Sequel!" The Dominant Men/submissive women SIG combined forces with the Switchables to present "A Taste of S/M: An Exploratorium". And three evenings' worth of films and videos unspooled at the Anthology Film Archives, finally culminating in a Wrap (and Play) Party at Paddles on the last evening of the festival.
This year also marked the addition of a fundraising gala, held on opening night at The LURE. Nearly $1,200 was raised during a rather boisterous auction, with the proceeds divided equally between the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom and the Leather Archives & Museum. Many thanks to everyone who attended for their fantastic generosity - and to those who donated items for the auction, including featured filmmakers Roger Earl ("Born to Raise Hell") and Cleo Dubois ("The Pain Game").
Please also give enthusiastic thanks to the sponsors of the Second Annual NY S/M Film Festival, for their support in making the event such a success - H/X Magazine, New York Metropolis, Purple Passion, The Baroness, B&D Pleasures and SoloMan NYC Video. Immense gratitude also goes to John Mhiripiri and the rest of the staff at Anthology Film Archives for providing the festival with such a comfortable and hospitable home.
Kudos should also go to the TES Board of Directors, past and present, for their support of the festival. And last, but certainly not least, the festival certainly would not have been possible without the work of a fine cadre of volunteers. Their efforts ran a wide gamut - planning, advising, arranging and publicizing; schlepping and posting; website updating; ticket
tearing and ushering; informing and schmoozing.
