"Beatty makes porno into fetishistic film noir; imagine a kinky Louise Brooks, a sadistic Marlene Dietrich (who's the top?), and some nipple clamps and hot wax, and you're beginning to get the idea." -- Tristan Taormino, Village Voice
with
Capture
Alpha, 2002, USA, 48 minutes.

With smokey-voiced narration and a stylistic nod to the hard-boiled detective flick, a predatory girl gang “abducts” a hunky ladies man and trains him to be their "boy toy." Along the way he is alternately subjected to delightful tortures, then cruelly ignored as the girls turn their attentions to each other.
"Independently made, it's a breath of fresh air...well-edited and paced, it's a bisexual gender-bender!" -- Laura Weide, On Our Backs
"...there is voyeurism and fetish everywhere...the chemistry is for real and it shows!" -- Shara Black, The Advocate.

Saturday, Oct. 12th, 7:00 PM
Sade
Location: Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave., NYC
Benoit Jacquot, 2000, France, 100 minutes. In French with English subtitles.
Starring Daniel Auteuil, Marianne Denicourt and Isild Le Besco.
Described by director Benoit Jacquot as “..a cross between a rose and a whip,” this sumptuous look at the Marquis de Sade finds him in the year 1794, at the bloodiest heights of the French revolution and recently interred at Picpus, an uneasy asylum for aristocrats avoiding the guillotine. As a former mistress pulls strings to keep him off of the daily death lists, Sade endeavors to make the most of his captivity, holding amused court with his scandalized fellow inmates and inspiring the eventual trust of the wary but intrigued young Emilie. And when the carnage ultimately moves to within the gates of the asylum, Sade’s celebration of sensation, the existentialism of his writings and philosophy, are put in historical and illuminating place.
“In its quiet, literate way, the film is almost as subversive as its central character.”-- Stephen Holden, The New York Times
"...a fiercely clever and subtle film...like Sade himself, utterly unblinking in the face of extreme pain and sexuality.”-- Rich Cline, Film Threat
