MEETING REPORTS

OUCH AND CRAFTS: A "do-it-yourself" panel at TES
by 007

"Why spend anywhere from $50 to $600 on scene products you can make yourself for $5 to $60 ???" This was the question last week at TES as a panel led by Paul the NyghtOwl, Jenn, and Jason demonstrated how to make your own scene materials.

Paul started the evening with an extremely thorough presentation on making canes. Inspired by last year's TES caning workshop given by Hilton, Paul found a company in California, which sells inexpensive, rolled rattan. Soaking the rattan in cold water, drying it, and soaking it again in linseed oil, makes the rattan very strong and flexible. Paul then detailed trimming the reed down to size (using a common anvil pruner) and sanding the wood down to a smooth finish using coarse grade sandpaper and sanding pads. Both the pruner and the sandpaper can be found in any common hardware store, along with PVC electrical tape to give your canes a stylish handle. While canes can be made of other materials, Paul prefers rattan, noting to the audience that bamboo is NOT recommended as it is a hard, fibrous material that does not bend but breaks easily, leaving splinters in the bottom's bottom.

Jason followed, with a variety of rope toys he had made himself. Most of the toys were made of 3/8" nylon braided rope sold at Lowe's and other home improvement stores at a rate of 20 - 40 cents per foot. Compared to similar toys that sell for $50, the savings are tremendous. From there, the craftsman just needs imagination and a few knots.

To close the evening, Jenn gave a discussion on the home creation of corsets, noting the website www.pastpatterns.com as a great source for patterns used to design your corset. Jenn also pointed out that while whalebone is no longer used in the creation of corsets, some fabric stores carry coiled spring stays which are stronger and better than plastic.

Out in the Streets: Private Play in Public with Jack McGeorge
by Paul NyghtOwl

On Wednesday, March 6, Jack McGeorge led the Bondage Group in a discussion of how to play privately in public. Jack's thorough outline began with that common kink of having a girl on a leash. He related how his slave would be leashed from her collar in public situations, walking her right down the street on the end of a near-invisible length of nylon fishing line. He also told a story of a restaurant they used to frequent, and of games of power and play right in the plain sight of other patrons. (And yes, he told the one about the time an overzealous maitre d' called the cops--and how he had to explain to a large officer of the law that this was in fact just "kinky sex stuff.")

Aided by nakedgirl, Jack showed how a steel chain and cuffs can be worn around the stomach and on the wrists beneath an ordinary dress shirt. He also told stories of his experiences with a slave--whose everyday dress consisted of specially-modified shirts with cut slits to accommodate chains, and Velcro collar-covers enabling her to be collared and/or cuffed at all times. The workshop was an eye-opener for the Bondage group, as Jack encouraged his listeners--telling them that once they've set a goal for themselves, achieving it is only limited by their imagination.

THE TES FAQ
by Paul NyghtOwl

Are there any meetings that aren't open to everyone?
Yes. Board meetings (organization business) and the three yearly TES membership meetings are members-only. You can sign up to speak at board meetings. Voting rights at membership meetings come six weeks after membership. Tuesday night meetings are open to everyone. As for Wednesday SIG meetings, TES-TING (TES--The Next Generation) is only open to those age 18-35 and their significant others. And the Men's Group and Women's Group are gender-specific. Also, the Dominant Men/submissive women's group and Dominant Women/submissive men group encourage attendees to come in the proper mindset for their meetings to create a safe space for all attending.
